How to play downloaded audiobooks on iPhone, iPad, and Mac
Play downloaded audiobooks from Files, Finder, or iCloud Drive, and organise M4B, MP3, and other audiobook files into books and parts.
If downloading an audiobook left you with one audio file or a folder full of parts, Audely can turn it into an organised book with chapters, progress, artwork, and long-form playback controls. The download may be one M4B file, a folder of MP3 chapters, or several discs arranged as separate parts.
This guide is for playable audiobook files you are allowed to use and can see in Files, Finder, or iCloud Drive. A download protected inside Apple Books, Audible, Libby, or another service may need to remain in the app that supplied it.
Find the downloaded audiobook in Files or Finder
On iPhone or iPad, open Files and locate the audiobook. On Mac, find it in Finder. If you can browse to an M4B, MP3, M4A, or another supported audio file, you can place it in a folder for Audely to read.
An audiobook that appears only inside another listening app is different from an ordinary audio file. Audely does not bypass account protection or digital rights management. Use the supplying app when it does not provide playable files you can access yourself.
Put each audiobook in a clear folder
Keep the parts of one book together. A simple structure makes the collection understandable inside and outside Audely:

One complete M4B may already contain artwork, book details, and embedded chapters. A multi-file MP3 book depends more heavily on track or disc numbers, filenames, and folder structure to preserve narrative order.
Do not rename or convert everything before testing it. Embedded metadata may already identify the title, author, narrator, series, and correct part order.
Add the audiobook folder
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings › Library, choose Add folder, and select the folder through the system file picker. On Mac, open Audely › Settings › Library and choose Add folder.
Identify a book-only folder as Audiobooks. If the selected folder also contains podcasts, choose Podcasts and audiobooks, then mark the audiobook files during classification. Anything left unselected in that mixed-folder review is treated as a podcast.
Audely scans supported audio inside the selected folder and its subfolders. The supported list includes AAC, AIF, AIFC, AIFF, CAF, FLAC, M4A, M4B, MP3, and WAV, plus compatible audio recognised by the system.
Review the book and its parts
After the source scan, open Library › Audiobooks › Books. Confirm the title, author, narrator, artwork, series information, and part order.
A multi-file audiobook should appear as one book with several parts. Audely prefers complete, unique part numbering when it is available. When numbering is incomplete or ambiguous, filenames and folder paths help provide a deterministic order.
Corrections made in Audely change the listening library, not the original file. You can improve visible book information or artwork without rewriting audio in Finder, Files, or iCloud Drive. Mac is the better place for bulk corrections across a large collection, while iPhone and iPad focus on one item at a time.
Understand parts and chapters
An audiobook part is an audio file belonging to the book. A chapter is a seekable marker embedded inside the current file.
A single M4B can therefore appear as one part with many chapters. A folder of MP3 files may appear as many parts, and each MP3 may also contain its own embedded chapter data. Audely keeps the book’s parts in order and exposes supported embedded chapters while that source file is playing.
Listen and keep your place
Audely remembers the current part and position, calculates progress across the complete book, and marks the book finished only when all of its parts are played. Playback speed, sleep timer, queueing, notes, favourites, and system media controls support long listening sessions.
The local audiobook library is unrestricted in the free version. Audely Pro adds optional library sync, cloud backups, and every Audely theme. Audiobook parts are not transcribed.
Prepare for offline listening
A local folder is available while it remains on the current device. An iCloud Drive folder can make the same audiobook files visible elsewhere, but every device still needs separate folder permission and an individual file may need to download before playback.
Before travelling, make sure every part of the book is stored locally. Test the beginning, a later part, and any embedded chapters rather than assuming an iCloud placeholder contains the complete audio.
Add new books later
Place new audio inside a linked source folder, then run a source scan. On iPhone or iPad, open the folder’s options in Settings › Library and choose Scan folder. On Mac, choose Scan all folders.
A source scan reads the files available on that device. It is separate from Audely Pro sync, which carries supported library information and listening progress rather than source audio or folder permission.
Common questions about downloaded audiobooks
What app can play downloaded audiobooks on iPhone?
Use the app that supplied the book when the download is protected inside a store or subscription service. When you have an ordinary audiobook file in Files, Audely can organise and play it as a book without importing it into a hosted catalogue.
Can iPhone play an audiobook directly from Files?
Files can open compatible audio, but it does not provide a complete audiobook library. Audely reads a folder selected through the Files picker and adds book organisation, part order, progress, chapters, speed controls, and a sleep timer around the same source audio.
Do I need to convert MP3 audiobooks to M4B?
No. Audely supports both MP3 and M4B. Keep a working download in its current format unless a specific file cannot be decoded or its organisation is unusable.
Can downloaded audiobooks play offline?
Yes, when every source file is stored on the current device. An audiobook visible in iCloud Drive may still need to download before it can play without connectivity.
Remove a book without deleting the audio
Removing a book or part from Audely preserves the original source file. Audely records the exclusion so a later scan does not immediately import it again. Use Reset excluded audio in Folder information if you intentionally want the source to return.
