How to organise old and archived podcast files
Turn old MP3, M4A, and other downloaded podcast files into organised shows and episodes while preserving the original archive.
An old podcast may disappear from its original feed while your downloaded episodes remain perfectly playable. You may also have a discontinued show on a hard drive, a collection exported from another service, or MP3 files supplied directly by a publisher.
Audely can turn those files into shows and episodes without requiring the original RSS feed. This guide assumes you have playable audio you are allowed to keep and use.
Start with files you can open
Find the archive in Files, Finder, or iCloud Drive. Audely supports AAC, AIF, AIFC, AIFF, CAF, FLAC, M4A, M4B, MP3, and WAV files, along with compatible audio recognised by the system.
A podcast marked as downloaded inside another app is not necessarily an accessible file. If the audio remains inside Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or another service’s private storage, use that service unless it provides a permitted export or ordinary audio file.
Preserve the original archive first
Before reorganising hundreds of episodes, keep a separate copy of the source files. Audely deliberately does not move, rewrite, or delete the original audio, but renaming or editing files in another tool can still change your archive.
Audely Pro cloud backups contain supported library information, not source audio. Keep irreplaceable podcast files in storage you control and back them up independently.
Keep episodes from each show together
Use one folder per show when the archive contains several podcasts. A straightforward structure remains understandable even without Audely:

If every episode belongs to one programme, a single show folder is enough. Avoid mixing unrelated recordings in an undifferentiated folder when their embedded information is incomplete.
Make episode order understandable
Old podcast downloads often have inconsistent filenames or missing publication information. Preserve useful embedded metadata, then use clear filenames as a fallback:

Episode numbers help serial programmes. Dates help shows originally published chronologically. Test a small sample before renaming the complete collection because the files may already contain better titles, dates, descriptions, numbering, and artwork than their filenames suggest.
Add the archive as podcasts
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings › Library, choose Add folder, and select the archive through the system file picker. On Mac, open Audely › Settings › Library and choose Add folder.
Identify the folder as Podcasts. Audely scans its supported audio and uses embedded information, filenames, and folder context to form shows and episodes. If the source also contains audiobooks, choose Podcasts and audiobooks, then mark the book files during classification.
Repair the listening library without rewriting files
After the source scan, open Library › Podcasts and review the show names, episode titles, artwork, dates, descriptions, and numbering. An old archive with sparse metadata may need corrections before it feels like a complete podcast library.
Editing inside Audely changes its library record rather than the source file. Mac is useful for bulk corrections across several episodes, while iPhone and iPad focus on one item at a time.
Listen to an archived podcast offline
Once the source audio is available on the device, Audely can play the archive without contacting a publisher, feed, catalogue, or Audely server. Progress, per-podcast speed, queueing, a sleep timer, embedded chapters, favourites, notes, and played state remain available around those files.
If the archive is stored in iCloud Drive, make sure the episodes themselves have downloaded before going offline. A visible placeholder does not necessarily contain playable audio.
Add newly discovered episodes later
Place additional files in the linked folder, then run a source scan. On iPhone or iPad, use Scan folder from the folder’s options in Settings › Library. On Mac, use Scan all folders.
Audely does not search for missing episodes or reconstruct the original feed. It organises the archive you provide and keeps the source files under your control.
When a conventional podcast app is better
Use a conventional podcast client when the show still has an active feed and you want discovery, subscriptions, automatic downloads, or streaming. Use Audely when the files themselves are the collection you want to preserve and organise.
