How to play audiobook files on iPhone and iPad without iTunes

You do not need to add a downloaded audiobook to iTunes, Apple Music, or an Apple Books library before listening on iPhone or iPad. If you have an ordinary M4B, MP3, M4A, or another supported audio file, you can keep it in Files and let Audely organise it as an audiobook.

The title uses the familiar iTunes wording, but the current iPhone and iPad workflow happens through Files. Apple Books remains the right app for audiobook purchases that exist only inside Apple’s store library.

This guide applies to playable files you are allowed to use. Audiobooks protected inside Audible, Apple Books, Libby, or another service generally need to remain in the app that supplied them.

Check whether you have an audiobook file

Start by locating the download. On iPhone or iPad, look in Files, including Downloads, On My iPhone or On My iPad, and iCloud Drive. On Mac, look in Finder.

A filename ending in .m4b, .mp3, or .m4a is a useful sign that you have an accessible audio file. One audiobook may be a single large M4B, while another may arrive as a folder containing dozens of numbered MP3 files.

Seeing a book inside a store or subscription app is not the same as having an accessible file. Audely cannot open another app’s private storage or bypass digital rights management.

Put the audiobook in a folder in Files

Create or choose a folder under On My iPhone, On My iPad, or iCloud Drive, then place the audiobook inside it. When another app offers Save to Files, use that action to choose the folder. Keep every part of one book together.

A simple arrangement might be:

• Audiobooks/Author/Book title/Book title.m4b
• Audiobooks/Author/Book title/01 - Opening.mp3
• Audiobooks/Author/Book title/02 - The journey.mp3

If the audiobook begins on a Mac, you can place it in an iCloud Drive folder through Finder. Let the files finish uploading before looking for them on iPhone or iPad. Every part must also download to the listening device before completely offline playback.

Add the audiobook folder to Audely

In Audely on iPhone or iPad, open Settings › Library, choose Add folder, and select the folder through the system file picker. Identify a book-only folder as Audiobooks.

If the selected folder also contains podcast files, choose Podcasts and audiobooks, then mark the audiobook files during classification. Audely scans supported audio in that folder and its subfolders without moving the source files into an Audely account.

Audely supports AAC, AIF, AIFC, AIFF, CAF, FLAC, M4A, M4B, MP3, and WAV files, along with compatible audio recognised by the system.

Review the book before listening

Open Library › Audiobooks › Books and check the title, author, narrator, artwork, and part order. One M4B may appear as one part with embedded chapters. A folder of MP3 files should appear as one book with several parts.

Audely uses embedded information, numbering, filenames, and folder context to organise the book. Corrections made inside Audely update the listening library without rewriting the original audio files.

Play the audiobook without an iTunes sync

Once the folder is linked, the old iTunes transfer workflow is not involved. Audely reads the audio from the folder you chose and remembers the current part and listening position across the complete book.

Playback speed, a sleep timer, chapters, notes, favourites, queueing, and system media controls are available around the downloaded audio. The local audiobook library and playback remain unrestricted in the free version.

Make an iCloud audiobook available offline

An item visible in iCloud Drive may still be a placeholder. In Files, make sure the complete audiobook has downloaded before travelling or disconnecting from the internet. Test the beginning and a later part rather than assuming every file is present.

Every iPhone, iPad, or Mac also needs its own permission to the source folder. Audely Pro sync can carry supported library information and listening progress, but it never transfers the source audiobook or its folder permission.

When the original audiobook app is the right player

Continue using Apple Books, Audible, Libby, or another supplying app when the audiobook exists only inside that service. Audely is designed for audiobook files you can access in Files, Finder, or iCloud Drive.
