Which audiobook stores let you download audiobook files?

Buying an audiobook does not always give you an audio file. Some stores provide an MP3, M4B, or another file you can keep in Finder or Files. Others provide access that works only inside the store’s app. A few decide title by title.

That difference matters if you want to choose your own player. Audely can organise supported audio files you can access yourself, but it does not sign in to audiobook services or bypass their protection.

The clearest choice for downloadable files

Libro.fm explains that every purchased audiobook can be downloaded as DRM-free MP3 files or one M4B file. That makes the result easy to recognise, back up, and use in a compatible player.

Google Play Books also supports audiobook export, but availability depends on the title. Check Additional information › Export option on the book’s details page before relying on it.

Downpour says much of its content is DRM-free, while some publisher-restricted titles work only in Downpour’s apps. Check the individual title rather than assuming the whole catalogue follows one rule.

Downloads that remain inside a service

Audible lets customers download eligible purchased titles, but its documented computer workflow opens the download through Audible and its supported devices. Audely does not activate or unlock Audible purchases.

Apple’s instructions redownload purchased audiobooks through Apple Books. That is different from receiving a normal audiobook file in Finder or Files.

Spotify says an audiobook payment grants access rather than transferring the content. Its offline download remains part of Spotify.

Kobo directs audiobook listening to its iOS and Android app or selected Kobo eReaders, while Chirp explicitly says its audiobooks cannot be downloaded for offline listening outside the Chirp app.

Check before you buy

Look for wording such as DRM-free, MP3 download, M4B download, or Export audiobook. If the store describes only offline listening in its own app, assume it is not providing a portable file unless the store explicitly says otherwise.
