How to play downloaded podcasts on iPhone, iPad, and Mac
Play downloaded podcasts from Files, Finder, or iCloud Drive, and organise MP3, M4A, and other audio files into shows and episodes.
If downloading a podcast left you with an MP3, M4A, or another audio file, Audely can turn it into an organised show and episode with progress, artwork, and podcast playback controls. A downloaded episode can outlive the app, feed, or website that originally supplied it.
This guide is for playable podcast files you are allowed to use and can see in Files, Finder, or iCloud Drive. Audely does not search podcast catalogues, subscribe to feeds, or download new episodes from publishers. Its role is to organise and play the files you already have.
Check that you have an actual audio file
A podcast marked as downloaded inside Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or another service is not necessarily an audio file that other apps can open. Look in Files on iPhone or iPad, or Finder on Mac, for an MP3, M4A, or another supported audio file.
If the episode exists only inside the app that downloaded it, continue listening there. If you have a playable file from the publisher, an archive, or another permitted source, put it in a folder Audely can read.
Put the podcast files in a clear folder
Start with a folder that you can keep available on the device. A local folder is simplest for one device. An iCloud Drive folder can make the same source files visible elsewhere, although every iPhone, iPad, or Mac still needs separate folder permission.
You can use one top-level podcast folder with subfolders for each show, or link several show folders separately. The exact hierarchy is your choice. Consistent metadata and filenames matter more than a complicated structure.
A useful pattern is:

Dates and numbers are not required, but they can help when the audio lacks embedded episode information.
Add the podcast folder
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings › Library, choose Add folder, and select the folder in the system file picker. On Mac, open Audely › Settings › Library and choose Add folder.
Identify the folder as Podcasts. Audely scans supported audio in that folder and its subfolders, then uses embedded metadata, filenames, and folder context to form shows and episodes. If the folder also contains audiobook files, choose Podcasts and audiobooks and classify the book files during import.
The supported list includes AAC, AIF, AIFC, AIFF, CAF, FLAC, M4A, M4B, MP3, and WAV, plus compatible audio recognised by the system.
Review the resulting shows and episodes
Open Library › Podcasts after the source scan. Check show names, episode titles, artwork, dates, and numbering. Well-tagged files usually need little attention. Older recordings and manually named downloads may need a library correction.
Editing inside Audely changes the library record, not the source file. This means you can make a concise show title, replace artwork, or repair an episode description without altering the original audio in Finder, Files, or iCloud Drive.
Mac is useful for larger collections because it supports bulk editing across selected episodes. iPhone and iPad keep editing focused on one item at a time.
Listen offline
Once the audio is available on the current device, Audely can play it without contacting a podcast service. You still get long-form controls such as progress, per-podcast playback speed, queueing, a sleep timer, embedded chapters, favourites, notes, and played state.
If the source lives in iCloud Drive, download it before going offline. A placeholder file can appear in Files or Finder even when the audio data is not yet stored locally.
Add more episodes later
Place new audio inside a linked source folder, then run a source scan. On iPhone or iPad, open the folder’s options in Settings › Library and choose Scan folder. On Mac, use Scan all folders.
A source scan checks the files available on that device. It is separate from Audely Pro sync, which handles supported library information and listening state rather than source audio.
Common questions about downloaded podcasts
What app can play downloaded podcast files on iPhone?
Audely can play accessible MP3, M4A, and other supported audio as organised shows and episodes. A podcast download protected inside another service must remain in the app that supplied it unless that service provides an ordinary audio file.
Can an MP3 file be organised as a podcast?
Yes. Identify its folder as Podcasts when adding it to Audely. Embedded information, filenames, and folder context help determine the show and episode details.
Can I add a downloaded podcast to Apple Podcasts?
Audely does not add files to Apple Podcasts. It creates its own podcast library from folders you choose, which is useful when the audio itself is the collection you want to manage.
Can downloaded podcasts play offline?
Yes, when the source audio is stored on the current device. If it lives in iCloud Drive, download the episode before disconnecting from the internet.
Remove an episode without deleting the file
Removing an episode or show from Audely removes its library information and preserves the source audio. A later scan remembers that exclusion instead of immediately bringing the episode back.
If you intentionally want to import the same file again, open Folder information and use Reset excluded audio. Deleting the actual file in Finder or Files remains a separate system action outside Audely.
When another podcast app is a better fit
Choose a conventional podcast client when you want discovery, RSS subscriptions, automatic episode delivery, or streaming from a catalogue. Choose Audely when the audio files themselves are the collection you want to organise and keep under your control.
